WHAT TO READ FOR WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Hola amigos!

March 8 was International Women’s Day and March is U.S. Women’s History Month, so today I want share my thoughts on why we should ALL be feminists and share my favorite books and screen adaptations about womanhood and gender equality.

WHY WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS

Surprisingly over twenty years into the new millennium we still have to ask ourselves this question because there are still misconceptions about what feminism and being a feminist mean. There is still the belief that feminists are angry, liberal, non-religious, gay women that hate men and that feminism is a movement against men. That’s why it is important to keep reminding ourselves what feminism and being a feminist really mean:

FEMINISM
fem·i·nism /ˈfeməˌnizəm/

noun – the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

FEMINIST
fem·i·nist /ˈfemənəst/

noun – a person who supports feminism.

adjective – relating to or supporting feminism.

That’s it. That simple. Feminism is about gender equality and being a feminist is about supporting gender equality. Despite our gender identification, sexual orientation, and religious or political beliefs, I think that if we are human we should be feminists because equality is a basic human right we all should protect.

While we as human race have made progress toward gender equality, the world is still an unfair and downright dangerous place for girls and women. And while we personally may not think we are prejudiced, looking the other way when women and girl are subject to injustice, condones and perpetuates gender inequality. We may disagree with other feminists religious and political beliefs but we can still join them to protect women’s rights and protect girls and women from violence and injustice.

We Should All Be Feminists is the best nonfiction book I’ve read on this topic, and this the TED talk by the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is almost as good as reading the book. Enjoy it!

These are the books I’ve read about gender equality and womanhood. If you click on the covers it will take you to my review on Goodreads:
