EXCITING BOOKISH NEWS FEBRUARY 2021
Welcome to the first bookish news of 2021!
Here I shared with you the last books I read, new arrivals, what I would be reading next and my pending ARCs.
My favorite read in January was definitely Home Before Dark. IT WAS GOOD! I almost DNF it when I realized it had all the elements from all haunted houses’ stories ever told: a fixer upper with a dark history of strange crimes and deaths, a family with a young child that buys the house as an investment and has to leave the house in a few days leaving everything behind because their child’s life is being threatened by supernatural powers, poltergeist disturbances, ghosts that only show in pictures… BUT ALL THESE TROPES are not what they seem, so I strongly recommend you keep reading. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how everything untangles at the end!
Then a very close second was The Year of the Witching. It was all kinda of awesome! An outstanding masterpiece of imagery, it gives a totally new meaning to the words gothic and atmospheric. I bet that if Alexis keep writing like this she will become her own genre just like Neil Gaiman. Like with Gaiman’s books. her style is so unique it wasn’t easy for me to read The Year of the Witching. BUT I STILL LOVED IT. And the social content is awesome The world building is well… Out of this world! alien but familiar at the same time, a surrealist painting of the real world. The plot moves slooow, but I really didn’t care because I was SO immersed! A real treat!
Then there was Shine your Icy Crown. FACT: THE WORLD WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER PLACE IF EVERYONE READ THIS BOOK. This book is a “MUST GIFT”. I already preordered one for my daughter (and I really can’t remember EVER preordering a book!). This is everything the world needs to hear about how to raise decent human beings. BUT, especially, this is everything the world needs to hear about how to (and how to NEVER) raise or treat women. This is what every woman in the world should hear and (should NEVER hear) from the day she’s born. A reminder of why we should all be feminists. Also… I was so pleasantly surprised to discover this book was illustrated. The illustrations are adorable. Awwww. this was as magical and poignant as I expected… and much more!
And well, as expected, I didn’t stick to my new year resolutions of not getting more books and ARCs until I read some of the ones I have, and I requested more ARCs that I should have! And got new books as well.
Also hope to be able to catch up with my pending ARCs.
