WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE “MUST READ”S AND “MUST WATCH”S!

Hola Amigos!

This Saturday February 20 is World Day of Social Justice, so today I wanted to share with you the books I’ve read about this topic and what I planned to read next.

“‘Social justice’ is defined, for the purpose of the observance, as including issues of poverty, unemployment, and unfair exclusion that results in economic harm or social ostracism.

On World Day of Social Justice, there are media campaigns to raise awareness of the need for better social justice both within nations and between nations. Promoting human rights, removing artificial social barriers based on race, gender, or religion, and standing up for the rights of migrants, the disabled, and the elderly are among the observance’s themes on any given year.” – Global Observances

Each genre shows a different aspect of this topic.

Nonfiction like Educated, Hillbilly Elegy and We Should All Be Feminists talk about the causes of social inequality; books like Kindred, The Diviners, The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, Like Water for Chocolate, The House of the Spirits, The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, The Help, Dominicana give a historical perspective and contemporary books like The Hate U Give show what progress we’ve made and where improvement is still needed. And then my favorites, Dystopians like The Handmaid’s Tale and Vox, are a warning about why to continue to promote and advocate for social justice is so important.

And these are the books I’d like to read next:

I absolutely loved Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enríquez, one of my all time favorite cross genre books, so I’m thrilled to be reading now the ARC of her new book The Dangers of Smoking in Bed: Stories. Same with The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz., it is one of my all time favorite historical reads so I can’t wait to get to Drown!

As far as screen adaptations, these are y favorite. Enjoy the trailers!

What about you? Is Social Justice a topic you enjoy reading about? What are your favorite Social Justice books? Any book and screen adaptations I should add to my TBR?

This post is part of these wonderful bookish features, in which I intend to participate throughout 2021:

Thank you!
